Adventure's Journal - Hand of the Oracle

Dark War Year 14

The Final Month, A Time to Rest and Study

Week 1

Day 1

Anelyka

Lord Xeronisdrssiraz'es assigned the kobold, Snips, as my personal guard. I'm sure he's also to keep me from prying into areas in which I'm unwelcome.
Day 3

Anelyka

The mindflayer agreed to let me pay my respects to his fallen apprentice. The funeral rites may have scarred me for life, but I did gain valuable insight about the workings of its mind.

Week 2

Anelyka

Snips has been a gem. I would have been assaulted several times without his intervention. There is something special about him, though. I'm certain that there's more there than meets the eye. One evening when I was finished studying, we played hide-and-seek in the woods. It took all my tricks to find him, and I'm still unsure whether or not he grew bored and let me win.

Week 3

Day 2

Anelyka

Snips came to breakfast covered in blood. After casting some spells that will hopefully conceal my involvement, I helped him remove the body. Is he showing off for me, or is this the power he allows everyone to see? I must remember to never show weakness when he is near. I'm not sure our friendship would save me.
Day 5

Anelyka

While helping me find a tome about dragon anatomy, Snips revealed that his strength comes from consuming the whole bodies of several dragons. I'm not sure if I believe him or not. He also recommended dragons as favorably-textured treats.

Week 4

Anelyka

I convinced Lord Xeronisdrssiraz'es that the wildlands in his territory need Druidic protection, but I was unable to find someone willing to relocate and tend them. I did what I could, but they need a more permanant solution. Xeronisdrssiraz'es gave me a medalion with his mark to facilitate my travels to and from his realm.
I've picked up much of the Yuan-ti language and culture during my visit. It's hard to keep a straight face when the Yuan-ti call me names. Apparently, they also think I have some unpleasant human smell, too. I find it highly unlikely since I adhere to the strictest of hygiene standards. Perhaps it's just a psychological dislike of my species that makes them detect an odor.

Dark War Year 15

Hammer / Deepwinter

Day 1

Nicholaus Hungate

The new year passed without notice as we prepared to leave the oracle, heading south to investigate the invasion of Shadowdale. Nobody seems to have the will to celebrate much anymore.

Anelyka

Minthrix seems to have a globulous parasite, now. My spells were unable to remove it. Is this creature a manifestation of his increasingly unstable mind?

Day 2

Nicholaus Hungate

Landos' ability to teleport certainly came in handy, in a matter of minutes, he got us to the yaun-ti outpost south of Shadowdale. We spent the night. At least the yaun-ti keep it plenty warm, still gives me the chills sleeping among them. I spent most of the night talking with some caravan guards and mercenaries that were also being allowed to stay. They were all a pretty ragged bunch, half staved and worn out, and they were the lucky ones. To the south they are dying in droves to hunger and the snow; and to the north they are dying to the sword. I am eager to go; the Protector did not give me immortality so I could sit around.

Day 5

Nicholaus Hungate

After sludging through thigh deep snow for three days, we made it to the outskirts of Shadowdale. We are moving slow but at least we got plenty of magic to create food and keep us protected from the weather. Anelyka is guiding us through the snow with little problem.
We encountered our first resistance. A group of ogres and humans were arguing over spoils after having killed nearly 20 people in a small cluster of homes. We defeated them easily. We were able to save seven. Ever human life is becoming more and more precious – even enemies. We captured two of the humans and Augus got quite a bit of information out of them. They didn’t have much fight left in them. Even the ‘bad’ guys seem to have little hope left. Landos teleported most of them to safety in Kingsholm, a husband and wife refused to leave due to family ties. That is a handy trick. We decided to hold up in Minthrix’s magic shelter for the night. I fear that he is idled in the head. I am not sure if it is what he has done or what has been done to him, either way he is clearly damaged in some way that the Oracle cannot fix. We want to be fresh heading into Shadowdale tomorrow. They are said to be hiring mercenaries. We are going in as the “Tombstone Warriors”. We may have to play down how badass we really are; we don’t want to panic them!

Anelyka

Minthrix's parasite seems to have no bearing on his combat capabilities. In fact, he seems much stronger, now.

Minthrix

Did you see the way the ogre's head explod…a result of an increased pressure which led to intracranial hematoma, cerebral edema and contributed to hydrocephalus. The raised intracranial hypertension led to cerebral ischemia by compromising cerebral perfusion…ed? That was GREAT!

Day 6

Anelyka

On the way to town, we received a sending from, if Nicholaus is correct, Azuth - the god of mages. After some divination magic and studying, Minthrix has concluded that the Weave in this area is damaged. The Sharites are definetly screwing things up, and they are a more immediate threat than the Zhents' theft of grain.
Later, as we neared Shadowdale, we were intercepted by an arrogant ass of a Zhent mage riding some strange flying toad-like creature. We made it to town okay, and Angus secured a room for us at the central Inn. We registered ourselves with a sergeant or someone else of lower-middle rank and were told to take over a farm or home from some locals and use their hospitality for the winter.
Before dinner, we split up into pairs and trios and did some reconnaissance. I scouted the outlying farms and homes with Nicholaus and concluded that we'll be staying very far from town if we move in to one. It seems to be only mercenaries staying with the local population, though. One of my companions found out that the main army is staying at a nearby castle, and some of it is staying in make-shift barracks in the town proper.

Day 7

Anelyka

Snips showed up during meditation this morning. He seems particularly eager to kill someone today. I hope he doesn't kill the wrong person or get caught while we're out of town “looking for a place to stay.” Angus did pay for another day of our room so that Snips would have a place to sleep while we're active.
We headed to Watcher's Knoll, which I believe coincides with where the god's message wished us to look. There, we fought a skeletal dragon. It didn't use a breath weapon, but it was still a formidable opponent. It guarded the entrance to a tomb, which we entered. There, we fought a much stronger creature that sucked the magic and minds from most of the party. We were healed by Sylune's Kiss and able to move on after a few nights of rest.
